Overview of Programs for Schools, Nonprofits and Corporations
THE HUMBLE HONEY BEE PROJECT: Eco-Literacy Program
Planet Bee offers schools and organizations a lively, hands-on workshop focused on honey bee biology and the cultivation of environmental stewardship. We bring an observation hive filled with live honey bees on site and engage students in developmentally appropriate interactive lessons such as pollination games, sample examinations, and seed-ball making. Our curriculum is in line with the Next Generation Science Standards.
ZOMBEE WATCH PROJECT: Citizen Science Brought to Your School
John Hafernik, ZomBee Watch founder and professor emeritus of Entomology at San Francisco State University, recently discovered that honey bees are being affected by a zombie fly parasitoid (a parasite that always kills its host). Honey bees infected by the parasitoid are attracted to lights at night and exhibit zombie-like behavior.
Our ZomBee Watch Project consists of two or three onsite visits to your classroom and includes in-depth lessons on honey bee behavior, the zombie fly life cycle, sample collection, recording and analyzing scientific data, and more. Students will design their own light traps to catch "ZomBees", and contribute their data to an international project.
ADOPT-A-HIVE PROGRAM: School and Nonprofit Campus Beehive Program
Let us bring a beehive to your school campus! Planet Bee educators will provide lessons for the students at the hive and students will be able to suit up, see live honey bees in action, and even open the hive to investigate frames of bees (with proper protective gear of course)! Our beekeepers will maintain the hive with the opportunity for staff, students and community members to shadow and learn the trade in individualized, intimate lessons. We even lead a honey-spinning in the fall, one of the sweetest rewards of working with honey bees!
BEE GREEN INITIATIVE: Corporate Beekeeping Program
Planet Bee individually designs engaging hands-on beekeeping programs for businesses of all sizes. We help companies install beehives on their corporate campuses, conduct honey spinning workshops, and help organize their own beekeeping clubs. Our Bee Green Initiative not only functions as amazing team-building and supports companies’ own green directives, but has the added benefit of creating widespread awareness of honey bee decline both within the company and outside of it.
BEE-DAY PARTIES: Make your child's birthday one they'll never forget!
Does your daughter or son love bugs? Is their special day coming up? If so, you should consider inviting Planet Bee to your party. We offer a full Bee-Day Party package to make sure your child’s birthday is the bee’s knees! Our awesome teachers will visit your home or backyard with an observation hive of live honey bees and a whole lot of fun. They will teach your students our bee basics curriculum, lead creative pollination games, show children how to make seed balls, and run a variety of hands-on activities. Our party package will be adapted based on the age of your child and your specific wants and needs.
