Coding for Conservation Intern - Job Description (Woodinville, WA)

Project Description: Planet Bee Foundation seeks college-aged interns to support a grant-funded STEM and environmental education pilot at Leota Middle School. Interns assist with in-person classroom activities, support coding and data-collection lessons, and mentor middle school students in conservation and technology. This stipend-supported internship runs January–May 2026.

What will Coding for Conservation Teach Students?

Students will engage in hands-on, project-based learning focused on data application:

Coding: Students use software to learn foundational digital skills for data processing and digital visualization.
Data Analysis: They analyze real environmental data collected from the project's Smart Native Bee Homes.
Community Science: Students contribute directly to conservation efforts by using tools like iNaturalist to track native bee populations and biodiversity.
Conservation Application: Students translate data findings into solutions that address site-specific socio-environmental issues.

Intern Role Summary: The primary role is in-person support and instructional mentorship. Interns will assist educators and students with:

Guiding small student groups through lessons around coding and data analysis tasks.
Providing hands-on technical assistance with hardware and software troubleshooting.
Serving as a STEM role model and creating a pathway for underrepresented youth into environmental and technological fields.
Supporting the Community Educator in organizing and leading local conservation outreach events.

While not required, ideal candidates would have experience with some of the following:

CS Literacy: Foundational understanding of coding logic or computer science concepts.
Data Competency: Basic proficiency in data handling, interpretation, and visualization (e.g., spreadsheets, simple charting) at the middle school level of mathematics
Mentorship Experience: Ability to guide and engage middle or high school students. Must have relevant experience (e.g., tutoring, coaching, or youth leadership).
Communication: After training with Planet Be Foundation, the ability to explain technical or scientific concepts clearly and patiently.
Reliability: Consistent attendance for scheduled training and teaching days.
Transportation Access: Ability to reliably travel to the in-person school site in Woodinville, WA.
Interest: Strong interest in technology, education, or environmental conservation.

Requirement: Candidate must be a resident in the US and in close proximity to the teaching site.

Location and Format: The program is run in-person at Leota Middle School at 19301 168th Ave NE, Woodinville, WA 98072 in the North Shore School District, WA.

Time Commitment: The core program runs for approximately five months (January 2026 – May 2026). Interns are typically expected to commit 5-7 hours per week in a combination of in person on site or virtually to prepare.

Instructional Support Days on Site at Leota: TBD but will be scheduled M-F during hours of instruction, candidates must have some availability during the school week. Instruction will start in March of 2026.

Online Virtual Training: Planet Bee Foundation will train and provide pedagogical and environmental learning for all our interns so they can be ready for the classroom. These weekly meetings are currently set for the following dates from 3 - 4 PM PST: January 27th, February 3rd, February 10th, February 17th via zoom. This must be attended by the interns.

Compensation: The position offers a stipend for eligible college aged interns. Applicants will be notified of this stipend if they are eligible and awarded this internship.
