Community Educator
he/him
Diego graduated from California State University, Chico with a Bachelor's in Biological Sciences with an option in Ecological, Environmental, and Organismal Biology. Passionate about insects, particularly bees, bee flies, butterflies, moths, aquatic insects, and Timemas. Experience in monitoring aquatic macroinvertebrate communities post-restoration to assess stream health and food availability for fish.
What do you love about bees?
How complex their communication and coordination can be. For example, the Japanese honey bee (Apis cerana japonica) has evolved a clever defense strategy. When worker bees detect a giant hornet scout, they envelop it in a coordinated attack and vibrate to essentially cook the invader. They can reach temperatures as high as 115°F because the bees' thermal tolerance is slightly higher than that of the hornets. They are also very cute, important ecologically for their pollinator services, and a very speciose group.
If I wasn't so good at my job I would be...
My dream is to describe a new species of insect in scientific literature.
