Community Educator
he/him
Doug is an ecologist, teacher, and writer. Born and raised in Philadelphia, I have always been drawn to the peculiar ecologies that emerge in the context of cities. My research has focused on the interactions between flowering plants and flower-visiting insects, and the pursuit of this topic has taken me from the rooftops of Philly to the endangered grasslands of Europe (and back again). During the school year, I teach high school biology and environmental science. In the summer months, I focus on research collaborations, writing projects, and beekeeping.
What do you love about bees?
Bees, along with other flower-visiting insects, are exceptional for the degree to which their lives and ecological relationships are presented, almost unobscured, to the human observer. They perform, as it were, on the gaudy stage of flowers, and we are invited simply to pay attention.
If I wasn't so good at my job I would be...
I hope to become a full-time writer.
